Created from existing stop-motion Moomin productions from the 1980s, ‘Moomins and the Winter Wonderland’ premieres in December

“Moomins and the Winter Wonderland”, stop-motion animation film based on Tove Jansson’s original Moomin books, will be created from existing stop-motion Moomin productions co-produced by Jupiter Film and Film Polski in the 1980s.

Finnish film company Filmkompaniet and Polish animation studio Animoon are co-producing the new project with a screenplay from Małgorzata Więckowicz-Żyła, Piotr Szczepanowicz and Ira Carpelan. The existing material is edited and restored to 4k format whilst staying true to the magic of Tove Jansson’s original stories.

In addition to Finland, the movie will be seen at least in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland, France, China and Japan. Among cast members to voice the characters in the English version of the movie are, for example, Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Skarsgård and Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander.

Moomins and the Winter Wonderland premieres in Finland December 1st, 2017.

“A warm-hearted, sincere, family animation with a great story that unfolds in a fantasy world – the Moominvalley. Moomintroll won’t hibernate. This year he wants to explore the winter and expects a very mysterious guest called Christmas to visit the Moominvalley!

This winter is extraordinary. Moomintroll decides to stay awake to explore the winter instead of having his winter slumber as usually. Winter is certainly totally different than he had imagined. Strangest creatures wander amidst the snowdrifts while midwinter darkness surrounds the Moominvalley. Moreover, an eccentric guest is soon to appear. This guest requires many measures and is called Christmas, an astounded Moomintroll is told.”
