The new Tampere Moomin museum and unprecedented Moomin treasures

Tampere Art Museum Moominvalley is devoted to the original works of Tove Jansson. The museum’s unique collection comprises thousands of works Tove Jansson and her companion Tuulikki Pietilä donated to the city of Tampere in the 80-90’s.

The collection includes for example three-dimensional tableaus built by Tuulikki Pietilä and the center of attention in the Moominvalley is a five-storey Moominhouse built by Tuulikki Pietilä, Pentti Eistola, and Tove Jansson.

The donations included also up to 61 cardboard boxes full of rare Moomin items which have been waiting for a proper analysing until today! The unseen Moomin treasures are revealed in May 2017 when the Moominvalley, now located on the ground floor of Tampere Art Museum, will move to Tampere Hall. The new Moomin museum will get approximately three times more space compared to the current premises.

Moominvalley at Tampere Art Museum will close at the end of October 2016 and the collection will be conservated and moved to new premises. In November 2016 will open a temporary exhibition at Winter Garden, which displays some of the unprecedented treasures from the cardboard boxes.

In addition to rare Moomin characters donated by Tove and Tuulikki, for example, Tove’s sketchbooks from her study time in Stockholm have been found. Also, the original models of the little Moomin figures designed by Tove’s mother, Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, are one of the rarest and most interesting discoveries.

The new Moomin museum presents Tove Jansson’s unique collection in a modern, experiential and multisensory way. Moomin museum’s manuscript is by the Exhibition Manager, Tampere Art Museum’s exhibition curator, Virpi Nikkari, and the museum is designed by the architect, artist Taina Väisänen.

A new feature of the museum will be a virtual Moominhouse where the Moominhouse is modelled with 3D scanning. Above all the museum is going to be a museum that honors Tove Jansson’s work. The motif that runs through the entire museum is the original Moomin books by Tove Jansson.

Until the end of October 2016, the Moominvalley is located on the ground floor at the Tampere Art Museum, Puutarhakatu 34.
