But what is the Sleepy Head Day?
The National Sleepy Head Day (in Finnish: Unikeonpäivä) is celebrated in Finland on July 27 every year. Traditionally on this day, the last person still sleeping in the house is dubbed the “sleepy head” (or the “laziest”) and awakened with water, either by being thrown into a lake or the sea, or by having water thrown on them.
The tradition began back in the 1880s in Naantali, Finland – exactly where Moominworld is located nowadays. People living in Naantali wanted to entertain the tourists in all possible ways and this Sleepy Head Day tradition was one of them by throwing one sleepy head into the sea.
Who is the sleepy head of the Moomin family? In Tove Jansson’s book Moominland Midwinter Moomintroll is awake while others are hibernating (like Moomins usually do during the cold winter). So perhaps Moomintroll can’t be nominated as a sleepy head. Maybe it is Moominmamma who enjoys sleeping the most. Who wouldn’t love the cozy naps in nature?
