The sea is present in many of Tove Jansson’s books and illustrations – she was known for her passion and love for the sea, and islands and storms were an important part of her family culture.
To celebrate summer, we are introducing a competition where the prize is a lighthouse experience at Söderskär in the Finnish archipelago, close to the places where Tove spent many of her summers.
Completed in 1862, The Söderskär Lighthouse is situated on a beautiful island, a three hour boat ride southeast of Helsinki in the Porvoo Archipelago. At Söderskär you are able to enjoy silence, solidarity and creativity in the middle of the ocean.
At the moment, the lighthouse hosts an exhibition entitled Tove and the Sea. It exhibits photographs from Tove’s life in the archipelago and illustrations from the book Moominpappa at Sea.
The exhibition also features rare illustrations that Tove drew for her uncle’s log books written on his sail boat adventures in the early 20th century. At the lighthouse you can also get to know the story of Söderskär’s lighthouse keepers and pilots.
We are inviting you to take part in our summer competition, where the main prize is a guided tour to the stunning lighthouse for you and a friend, including the boat trip to the island departing from Helsinki. The prize does not include trips to and from Helsinki from the winner’s home.
The guided tour will take place either on June 29th or August 16, depending on what suits the winner best. We will give out three main prizes, and three persons will win tickets for the boat ride to Söderskär (1 adult + 2 children). The boat ride tickets can be used at any time during the summer season 2018.
